About React Cosmos

Overview

React Cosmos is a fast, extendable sandbox for developing and testing React UI components in isolation. It is easy to install and lets developers prototype quickly, debug easily, and maintain quality at scale.

The project began over a decade ago in the Bucharest-based Analytics team at Hootsuite and was first showcased at ReactEurope 2015 in Paris. React Cosmos specializes in isolated component development and developer experience, and it is currently led by Ovidiu Cherecheș.

Key Benefits

  • Develop and test UI components in isolation without running the full app.
  • Prototype quickly and debug component states with a dedicated playground.
  • Build a well-organized, reusable component library for your team.
  • Export an interactive component library to any static hosting service.
  • Extend every aspect of the tool through a full-stack plugin system.
  • Integrate with Vite, Webpack, React Native, and Next.js, plus custom setups.

How It Works

Developers define component states as fixtures using a file-system based module convention. The user interface acts as a playground for browsing fixtures and manipulating components, and a static export turns the result into an interactive component library that deploys to any static host.

Use Cases

  • React developers prototype and test individual UI components in isolation.
  • Component library maintainers publish an interactive, browsable showcase to static hosting.
  • Teams standardize component states with the file-system fixture convention.
  • Open-source projects extend React Cosmos through its plugin system for custom workflows.
