About Origami Studio
Overview
Origami Studio 3 is a Mac application for designing, animating, and prototyping interactive interfaces in one tool. It combines a new Canvas interface for visual layout with the Patch Editor for building interactions with patches.
Origami Studio 3 imports editable vector shape and text layers from Figma via copy-paste or a plugin, and supports dynamic layouts that respond automatically to changes. Users can record and export prototype videos directly in the app.
Key Benefits
- Use Canvas freeform drawing tools, text editing, and visual components to lay out prototypes
- Edit dynamic layouts that respond automatically to changes
- Build interactive components in the Canvas and connect them with interactions in the Patch Editor
- Tap into native hardware APIs for Photo Library, Audio Metering, Haptic Feedback, GPS, and Device Motion
- Copy and paste editable vector shape and text layers from Figma, with a dedicated Figma plugin
- Capture, trim, and export prototype video directly in Origami and share via Origami Live
How It Works
Designers lay out prototypes visually in the Canvas, then connect components with interactions in the Patch Editor. Hardware patches bring in device capabilities like GPS, audio metering, and haptics, and prototypes can be recorded to video or shared through Origami Live.
Use Cases
- Prototype designers can visually lay out screens in Canvas and add interactions in the Patch Editor
- iOS designers can pull images from the device Photo Library and render haptic feedback in prototypes
- Designers working from Figma can copy and paste editable vector shape and text layers into Origami
- Teams can share prototypes nearby with peers in critique and reviews using Origami Live
- Product designers can record, trim, and export video of their prototype runs directly in Origami
Origami Studio Pros & Cons
- Free to download and use
- Figma import via copy-paste and dedicated plugin
- Accesses native iOS hardware APIs like GPS, haptics, and audio metering
- Performance improvements: 4.5x faster Patch Editor, 2x faster Origami Viewer
- Built-in prototype video recording and Origami Live sharing
