About Amp

Overview

Amp is a coding agent and development environment built for the frontier. Users run agents inside orbs, cloud environments where the agent keeps working after they close their laptop, or on their own machine through the Amp CLI and runner. The product page describes sending one prompt, closing the laptop, and returning to finished work.

Orbs wake on outside events such as a new Linear issue, CI failing on main, or a schedule the agent sets for itself. Teammates join the same orb to share control of the agent, code, and running app, while portals let anyone review changes and browse orb files from any device.

Key Benefits

  • Run agents in orbs that keep working after you close your laptop
  • Review agent changes and browse orb files from any device, including your phone
  • Wake an orb on a new Linear issue, failing CI, or a schedule the agent sets
  • Invite teammates into an orb to share the agent, code, and running app
  • Open a shell inside the orb, shared with the agent in the same tmux session
  • Link your ChatGPT subscription so Dial settings run on it instead of Amp credits

How It Works

Users install the Amp CLI with a single command and run amp in a terminal against local files and tools, or start an orb in the cloud. They send a prompt and close the laptop, then continue steering the agent from the web or a phone. Clients can also run amp sync to mirror an orb's changes into a local checkout, or amp --no-tui on servers and CI runners.

Use Cases

  • Software engineers run several orbs at once and review the changes from a phone or laptop
  • Engineering teams share one orb so members edit the same code, agent, and running app
  • On-call developers wake an orb automatically when CI fails on main and get a fix
  • Product teams connect a Linear issue that triggers an orb the moment it is filed
  • Server and CI operators run amp --no-tui on any machine with a shell and steer agents from the web

Why Choose This Product

Amp runs agents in cloud orbs and on local machines at the same time, and users steer both from any device. The team announced on September 13, 2026 that Amp is free to use when you bring your own compute and model subscriptions or keys, and the free Hobby tier includes pay-as-you-go orbs or free use of your own runners.
